Episode Summary
Did you know that one of Canada’s top universities now offers a course on personal finance? For FREE?!
If this is news to you, then get ready for a treat of an episode — @shmoneyhonies, meet @anastasiabarbuzzi’s next special guest, @adamhalpert 🎓.
Adam’s first foray into the world of finance was working alongside his father and grandfather who had their own business as financial securities advisors. Years later, he began working on @mcgillu‘s Personal Finance Essentials course, a groundbreaking collaboration with the @globeandmail, funded by @rbc Future Launch.
If you’re familiar with $HMONEY’s mission, then you know that we’ve questioned why (for the most part) lessons about personal finance have been left out of school curriculum. Fortunately, Adam and his team @desautelsmcgill believe that there’s a lack of systematized personal finance training out there too.
Adam’s resume is impressive and it’s taken him all over the world, from studying at @nasa to serving as a @kiva.org fellow in Uganda, helping to bring financial inclusion to the unbanked poor. But today on the show, he helps Anastasia answer questions ranging from, “Why did we never learn anything about doing taxes or paying bills in school?!” to “Why have gender roles dictated who handles money in relationships for so long?”.
