“If you are not investing in your time, you are not investing in yourself.” - Karma Brown

In 2021, those words could not be truer.

If you’re in a New Year’s slump or having major trouble managing your time in quarantine, today’s episode of $HMONEY Radio is for you.

On the podcast, I welcome @karmakbrown: award-winning journalist and author who you might’ve seen on @thesocialctv this week discussing the topic of her new book, The 4% Fix, which let me tell you, could not be more timely.

At 28-years-old, Karma decided to attend my alma mater, Ryerson University, to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a broadcast journalist. Though on her last day of class she was diagnosed with cancer, which led her to reevaluate her path forward.

From there, Karma “fell backwards” into her career as a print journalist and author whose dream was to be “the Katie Couric of the North” for most of her life. Six books later, including her debut novel Come Away With Me, which was a Globe & Mail Best 100 Books of 2015, and the number one national bestseller Recipe For a Perfect Wife, here we are.

I spoke with Karma last summer before the release of her first non-fiction work and since its launch date in December 2020, it seems she’s turned everyone onto the idea of her 5:00 a.m. routine. There are no time-tracking spreadsheets, tips on how to squeeze in yoga exercises while cooking dinner, or methods that add bulk to your never-ending lists - there’s only the latest research about time management, goal-setting, and strategies to help you indulge in the returns of investing in yourself.

Bestselling author Elizabeth Renzetti’s recent review of The 4% Fix struck a chord with me. As she put it:

“If you think there aren’t enough hours in the day for creativity, Karma Brown’s The 4% Fix will show you the light. In this engaging book Brown provides an easy, surefire way to find the time without having to add a 25th hour”.

And as someone who struggles with feeling like there aren’t enough hours in a day on a regular basis, I love Karma's unrestrictive framework for its manageability. Fortunately, you’ll learn about how it relates to money, personal finance and investment on today’s show

Let this episode be a reminder: You can’t be a night owl and a morning lark, as Karma likes to say. How will you use one hour — only four per cent of your day — to change your life? Allow her to advise you by listening here
