Reasons Why We All Need to Embrace Loud Budgeting
Reasons Why We All Need to Embrace Loud Budgeting
02.16.2024 - By: Anastasia Barbuzzi
I have a confession. When I was reckoning with some hard truths at the beginning of my personal finance journey, I was a little bit embarrassed and ashamed to say I was on a budget, let alone that I had one (not that tons of people were asking, but still).
Although my budget (or lack thereof until a few years ago) didn't come up in conversation a lot, being afraid to speak up for myself or admit that I was in a bind and squash my hustle-born pride were factors in overspending.
Funnily enough, this dialogue happened between me and myself more often than ever between me and another person. In hindsight, I see how avoidant I was with my finances at times and how hard it was to be brutally honest with myself about my habits.
Granted, a terrible accident contributed to the pickle I was in. Still, the keys to the way out were in reconciling with my behaviours and learning and improving my financial education to progress forward. Not to mention believing getting out of that hole was possible, that there was a better way, and that everything would be OK (eventually).
Why is this important? Why am I even telling you? Because as a result of acting out of fear, being scared of what people would think of me not being financially successful and secure in my early 20s (LOL, we are such self-important beings, aren't we?), I put myself in a more stressful position. I think we've all been there.
Only later (and with much work) did I realize who cares what others think. When the f*ck did I decide to hold myself to such standards and appearances, and what influenced them?
Fast forward to early this week when I found one of my new favourite personal finance accounts to follow, @chelseaspursuit, and came across the reel featured above about a new trend I'm obsessing over: LOUD BUDGETING. What she says in the video struck a chord and brought up all the feels I've expressed here:
βWelcome to the world of loud budgeting. A world where being vocal about your finances is celebrated and encouraged. Loud budgeting can help curb unnecessary spending, reduce anxiety, and ultimately, achieve your larger financial goals. Choose to be in control of your spending and embrace saying, βI don't want to spend,β instead of spending money that you shouldnβt. Going into debt for something you want isnβt cool anymore. Saying no because you care about your financial goals is. Loud budgeting and being in control of your finances? Now that is a flex.β
It is, indeed, a flex. Looking back, there are so many times I wish chose or could've embraced "I don't want to spend," without feeling any type of way about it or guilty from the pressure someone else was putting on me.
Loud budgeting is a tool to avoid the cycle of giving in and, consequently, giving yourself a bigger headache. Also, imagine being able to brush off judgment for loud budgeting because caring about and being in control of your money and financial goals is a whole look.
Itβs giving self-assurance; composure; sophistication π
