Women are powerful. Women are resilient. I'm not just saying that — history shows proof of it. And when women come together in support of each other, they're a force to be reckoned with.

Looking at the big picture, women have struggled financially throughout history because they have to systematically force themselves into the frame. Today, we're fortunate to have the groundwork for change laid for us by female finance pioneers of the past, though we can never forget them.

As recently as the 80s, we started recognizing women's history and accomplishments by making Women's History Month a "thing." And this month, on social media, we honoured several women who paved the way for future generations of females to acquire wealth and be considered worthy of positions of power that they earn for themselves.

Side note: Do I think it's a coincidence that numerous women we have to thank for helping us establish financial independence are women of colour? Absolutely not. In fact, I find it quite beautiful that when we look back at the events that spurred revolutions that landed us where we are today, many of them were started by people whom society has doubted, feared, hated, and repressed for far too long.

Here's to Women's History Month and celebrating the incredible strength of women every day.

Viola Desmond, 1914 - 1965

A shining example for Canadians and the rest of the world of resistance, entrepreneurialism, poise and strength.

Maggie Lena Walker, 1864 - 1934

A fearless thought leader in business ethics, promoter of women’s rights, and financial independence.

Viola Desmond, 1867 - 1919

A true businesswoman, symbol of perseverance, strong will, and true confidence.
